White Shaker syndrome occurs in middle-aged or young Malteses. It is a mild inflammatory disease of the brain, typical of some small dog breeds with white coats. Some claim that the association of this disease with the white color of the coat is linked with a skin and hair pigment, melanin. Affected dogs suffer from tremors. The tremors continue throughout the day and may be enhanced if the dog is excited or disturbed. Corticosteroids are usually used to improve the dog's condition. White Shaker syndrome is rarely fatal. After a few days of such treatment, most dogs will improve.

Possible skin problems in Malteses may include allergies, seborrhea, parasites or dandruff. The Maltese owner should have the dog checked for skin problems, eye, mouth, teeth and liver diseases on a regular basis. You can avoid dealing with these problems by buying Malteses from reputable breeders and providing your dog with proper care.
